THE STUDENT NONVIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE

"A final SNCC legacy is the destruction of the psychological shackles  which had kept black southerners in physical and mental peonage; SNCC helped  break those chains forever. It demonstrated that ordinary women and me, young  and old, could perform extraordinary tasks."

Ella Baker

SNCC was founded in the 1960’s and was organized by Ella Baker. She held a student meeting at Shaw University in April 1960. Baker thought that the SCLC group was out of touch with younger blacks so she created SNCC with the purpose of trying to make the movement progress faster. The new group played a large part in the Freedom Rides and strived on  desegregating buses and in the marches organized by King and SCLC.
